Monday, Oct. 12

Greetings internet.

Welcome back to Trendsetters.

A fun filled day of Twitter trending goodness awaits you today. Let's jump right into it.

#1. Paranormal Activity
Apparently, thousands of people from around the country and even more from around the world are making reports of paranormal activity. From ghost sightings to UFO encounters, the world of the paranormal is getting a lot of attention this week.

Ha, I wish.

Actually, Paranormal Activity is a low budget horror film currently showing in select cities throughout the nation. The movie is shot in the style of "The Blair Witch Project" and according to many sources is one of the scariest movies of our generation. The basic plot revolves around a couple who set up video cameras in their house to find ghosts and other "paranormal activity." Visit the (super low budget) website, here: http://www.paranormalactivity-movie.com/

#2. Happy Thanksgiving
A little early for thanksgiving? Actually not. Today is Canadian Thanksgiving! Canadians, however, don't have the traditional American Thanksgiving images of Pilgrims and Indians. In Canada, Thanksgiving is a day to celebrate the many explorers, both successful and not, who helped pave the way to settlement in all of Canada.

#3. Halloween
Yes, ghouls, ghosts, goblins, vampires, and, of course, costumes! Halloween is slowing creeping up on us and the people of Twitter are getting ready. From costume and party plans to arguments about the best candy, Twitterers are abuzz about the upcoming creepy holiday.

#4. Happy Columbus Day
Another holiday! For us in the United States, today is Columbus Day. If you didn't know, October 12, 1492 is generally the date agreed upon that Columbus discovered the "new world."

The biggest topic of discussion in conjunction with Columbus Day? "Why don't I have off work?" Yes, Columbus Day is one of the grey areas of national holidays. While many people get to enjoy the day off of school or work, just as many, if not more, won't have such an enjoyable Columbus Day.

#5. T-Mobile
T-Mobile is one of the largest cellular providers in the US. Today, the company is trending because of a large failure in one of its information databases. The failure directly effects every T-Mobile Sidekick owner. Owners of the popular phone/text messaging device will find that all of their stored information has been lost. This incident caused a slew of tweets disowning T-Mobile and their services.
In the wake of this technological disaster, the company announced that they would stop producing the Sidekick and offer a $200 rebate to all owners of the device, old and new.

#6. Music Monday
A tradition almost as old as Twitter itself. Twitterers reserve every Monday as a day to share their most beloved songs and artists with the rest of Twitter. Music Monday is a great way to discover new music, or get your own music out there if you're an artist yourself.

In keeping with the tradition, I suggest you take a listen to the artist MIKA. MIKA has been around since 2006, but just recently released a new album titled "The boy who knew too much..." MIKA is a breath of fresh air for those who are tired of the Top 40 mix of hip hop and pop rock. Find out more at MIKA's myspace: http://www.myspace.com/mikamyspace

#7. This is It
This phrase is trending for two (related) reasons today. First, it was recently announced that a limited run of a Michael Jackson documentary film (titled "This is it") would begin playing in theaters across the country on the 28th of October. Second, at midnight on October 12, a never before heard Michael Jackson song, also called "This is it" was released to the public.

And those are today's trending topics!

If you haven't already, I suggest you sign up for a Twitter account and join in the fun!

Sunday October 4, 2009

Today is Sunday, October 4th, and this is trendsetters.

Lets take a look at today's trending topics.

First up, #theway
Yes, a slow jam song from the 90's is today's top trender. Why? Ask Twitter.
In case you don't remember this song, It was a hit back in 1998 from the band Fastball.

Next on the list, Zombieland
Zombieland is a comedy horror flick released on Friday. Part of the reason for its popularity is because of the mass amounts of viral advertising that was published before the movie's release. At the moment the movie has an 89% fresh rating on rotten tomatoes, so it certainly is appealing to someone. (Check out http://www.zombieland.com/ for more info.)

Entourage
The hit HBO television drama Entourage is airing its season finale tonight and Twitter is abuzz with excitement.

Drew Carey

Drew Carey is trending today because of a gracious act of charity. Carey, the host of the TV game show "The Price is Right" is offering to donate $100,000 to the Livestrong foundation if his Twitter account reaches 100,000 followers by November 9th. Moral of the story here, FOLLOW DREW CAREY, @DrewFromTV

last, but not least:

#paparazzisucks

The only explanation to be had for this topic is that it is true. Twitterers' favorite celebrities are always being hassled by the paparazzi and they've had enough. And what better way to let the world know then by tweeting about it!

That's about it for this Sunday update, but keep checking back for more on Twitter's trending topic.

Sunday September 27, 2009

It's Sunday, September 27, 2009 and this is (an actually didn't have enough content to make a video of) Trendsetters!

Well. It's still a rather uneventful weekend on Twitter.

Twitter is still craving it's hash tags today. The top four trending topics remain exactly the same as yesterday.

Good for you, Twitter. You can keep yourself amused when there's nothing real to talk about.

However, there are two bits of news today that aren't hash tag topics.

First, Typhoon Ondoy hit the Philippines Today leaving nearly 100 killed and thousands more stranded and homeless. The American Red Cross is providing support to the typhoon victims. To find out how you can help, visit http://www.redcross.org/

And finally, famed director Roman Polanski was arrested today in Switzerland. In 1978, Polanski fled the United States after being wanted for sexual assault on an underage girl. Swiss authorities now await US word for Polanski's extradition back to the US.

And that's all that's trending today on Twitter. Join me next week as I continue to keep you up to date on Twitter trends!

Saturday Sept 26, 2009

Hello Internet,

It's Saturday September 26, and this is (a non-video edition of) Trendsetters.

Not a whole lot of real news is trending today and it shows because the top 4 trending topics are all hash tags. (#)

Let's run those down:

1. #iamsinglebecause

This is simply a way for Twitterers to complain about their love lives through tweets. Lets take a look at some kickers: "#iamsinglebecause i havent yet found a woman that can handle me & my b.s" "#iamsinglebecause he doesn't know i love him." and my personal favorite "#iamsinglebecause well .. It kinda rocks :P" Heh. Heh. Heh.

2. #cantlivewithout

A clever group of tweets about things people can't live without. These range from sappy tweets like "#cantlivewiout you. <3" and "#cantlivewiout my baby!" to the more obvious truths, "#cantlivewiout money." and "#cantlivewiout air."

3. #rememberbackndaday

Roughtly translated: Remember Back in the day. Pretty self explanatory. A collection of tweets about things people remember from years ago. Remember nicktoons? Remember $1.00 a gallon gas? Yes. I do. And boy do I miss those days.

4. #uselesswisdom

Did you know fish don't cry? Did you know dogs have black lips so they won't get sunburned? Did you know in 1987, American Airlines saved $40,000 by eliminating ONE olive from every salad in first class?

Neither did I. Thanks Twitter!

5. FOOTBALL!!!

The rest of today's trending topics are a collection of College names and acronyms. After all, it is Saturday afternoon. Collegiate football day! At the moment Michigan, LSU, and FSU are trending. For complete coverage of all of today's college football games visit ESPN's college site: http://espn.go.com/college-football/

Well, that's it for today. Not a very exciting day on Twitter, but fun non-the-less.

See you next time!
