Monday, Oct. 12

Greetings internet.

Welcome back to Trendsetters.

A fun filled day of Twitter trending goodness awaits you today. Let's jump right into it.

#1. Paranormal Activity
Apparently, thousands of people from around the country and even more from around the world are making reports of paranormal activity. From ghost sightings to UFO encounters, the world of the paranormal is getting a lot of attention this week.

Ha, I wish.

Actually, Paranormal Activity is a low budget horror film currently showing in select cities throughout the nation. The movie is shot in the style of "The Blair Witch Project" and according to many sources is one of the scariest movies of our generation. The basic plot revolves around a couple who set up video cameras in their house to find ghosts and other "paranormal activity." Visit the (super low budget) website, here: http://www.paranormalactivity-movie.com/

#2. Happy Thanksgiving
A little early for thanksgiving? Actually not. Today is Canadian Thanksgiving! Canadians, however, don't have the traditional American Thanksgiving images of Pilgrims and Indians. In Canada, Thanksgiving is a day to celebrate the many explorers, both successful and not, who helped pave the way to settlement in all of Canada.

#3. Halloween
Yes, ghouls, ghosts, goblins, vampires, and, of course, costumes! Halloween is slowing creeping up on us and the people of Twitter are getting ready. From costume and party plans to arguments about the best candy, Twitterers are abuzz about the upcoming creepy holiday.

#4. Happy Columbus Day
Another holiday! For us in the United States, today is Columbus Day. If you didn't know, October 12, 1492 is generally the date agreed upon that Columbus discovered the "new world."

The biggest topic of discussion in conjunction with Columbus Day? "Why don't I have off work?" Yes, Columbus Day is one of the grey areas of national holidays. While many people get to enjoy the day off of school or work, just as many, if not more, won't have such an enjoyable Columbus Day.

#5. T-Mobile
T-Mobile is one of the largest cellular providers in the US. Today, the company is trending because of a large failure in one of its information databases. The failure directly effects every T-Mobile Sidekick owner. Owners of the popular phone/text messaging device will find that all of their stored information has been lost. This incident caused a slew of tweets disowning T-Mobile and their services.
In the wake of this technological disaster, the company announced that they would stop producing the Sidekick and offer a $200 rebate to all owners of the device, old and new.

#6. Music Monday
A tradition almost as old as Twitter itself. Twitterers reserve every Monday as a day to share their most beloved songs and artists with the rest of Twitter. Music Monday is a great way to discover new music, or get your own music out there if you're an artist yourself.

In keeping with the tradition, I suggest you take a listen to the artist MIKA. MIKA has been around since 2006, but just recently released a new album titled "The boy who knew too much..." MIKA is a breath of fresh air for those who are tired of the Top 40 mix of hip hop and pop rock. Find out more at MIKA's myspace: http://www.myspace.com/mikamyspace

#7. This is It
This phrase is trending for two (related) reasons today. First, it was recently announced that a limited run of a Michael Jackson documentary film (titled "This is it") would begin playing in theaters across the country on the 28th of October. Second, at midnight on October 12, a never before heard Michael Jackson song, also called "This is it" was released to the public.

And those are today's trending topics!

If you haven't already, I suggest you sign up for a Twitter account and join in the fun!
